EMDR Therapy

You are not what’s happened to you

The past keeps holding you back.

You’ve experienced traditional “talk therapy” in the past. You’ve implemented all the coping skills, and made significant changes in your daily life activities. But it just feels that the past is always hovering over you, no matter how long time has passed.

You tell yourself you’re over it, but when something comes up in your daily life that reminds you of what happened, it’s like you’re right back there again. You’re tired of feeling stuck, stuck in your head, stuck replaying memories and reactions from the past, stuck in your career, stuck in your relationship, with your kids, family and friends.

Again you’ve tried coping skills: deep breathing and challenging your irrational thoughts/feelings. You know why you feel this way, but now you want to do something about it. You’re done managing your triggers, you want to stop being triggered.

Cognitively, you are fully aware that you are not “worthless” and that you are undeniably “good enough.” However, despite repeating those affirmations and trying to recall positive memories, the genuine feeling of inadequacy returns when you're triggered.

You want change.

EMDR Therapy can help with:

Deeply process overwhelming, unpleasant, or traumatic events

Reduce anxiety and panic symptoms

Increase self-worth and self-compassion

Be confident in yourself

Learn emotion regulation skills to deal with unpleasant experiences

Feel safe again in your body

With EMDR, you’ll be able to heal from past pain that is holding you back and live a truly fulfilling life. You’ll feel closer to yourself, your purpose than ever before, and finally feel free from your past.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, is a therapeutic technique that aids the brain natural ability to heal itself and improve overall mental health.

When disturbing experiences happen to us, they can get locked in our brain in their original form. This can include pictures, sounds, body sensations, feelings, thoughts or beliefs. EMDR steps in with its bilateral stimulation, usually in the form of side-to-side eye movements or tapping, to sort of mimic what your brain does during REM sleep. This helps your brain reprocess those traumatic memories (it doesn’t erase memories) in a way that takes away their intense emotional charge.

EMDR therapy is the key to unlock that part of the brain so reprocessing can happen and allow healing from the inside out.

The best thing is, you don’t have to share the details of you trauma if you don’t want to.

People often find that after EMDR sessions, the emotional charge attached to traumatic memories decreases. It's like giving your mind a chance to heal and move forward.

Let me start off by saying, I know you’ve have spent a lot of time trying to forget and ignore disturbing experiences. And I bet you’ve done a pretty good job on your own. You don’t have to heal alone. As your therapist, we spend significant time preparing you for treatment.

How does EMDR Therapy work

There are 8 phases to EMDR therapy

Stages 1-3 will be gathering history and making sure you have the resources to move to the next phase. We build the foundation of grounding tools to confront past memories, pain points head on.

Phases 4-7 phases are reprocessing phases typically done in one session. They are about activating the brain with bilateral movements, rewiring the body, then calming it down before the end of session. You may feel like you have one foot in the past and one foot in the present.

Phase 8 is re-evaluation which usually happens the session after a reprocessing session to check what changed between sessions, if something is still upsetting and then we move onto the next target (pain point, memory or negative thoughts).

EMDR can be challenging, honestly, healing altogether is challenging. Don’t worry we will always go at a pace that feels good to you. My priority in sessions are to create an environment of support and safety.
